A highly variable species, usually recognizable by its brown to orange body and the black crests on the head. The crest, parotoids, spiny warts, and dorsolateral ridges are especially prominent. Adults are typically 7-10cm in length. Where are Asian Spiny Toads from?
The range in which this species can be found is enormous and covers most of Southern China, India, and Southeast Asia in lowland habitats. Adults are terrestrial and can be found under rocks, logs, buy toads for garden and in leaf litter. They’re also common around human habitations.
Care for Asian Spiny Toads
We recommend housing these toads singularly in a glass terrarium of at least 18 x 18” or larger if you intend on keeping a small group together. Temperatures should be maintained between 24-26°C (75-79°F) during the day, with a night-time temperature drop to 20°C (68°F). This can easily be achieved with a reflector dome, low-wattage basking bulb, and controlled by a dimming thermostat.

Black-Spined Toads are medium-sized toads with warty skin and noticeable Parotoid glands behind the ridges above their eyes. They tend to be olive brown to dull red in color, with paler underbellies and a series of boney ridges along their backs, which is what their common name refers to. The black warty bumps along their bodies contain a Bufotoxin that is designed to ward off predators. Size: Males can grow up to about 8 -10cm (inches), whilst females are larger and can reach about 9 – 11 cm (inches).
Life span: Approximately 10 years. Black-Spined Toads are native to South-East Asia, with a large population arising in Singapore. Black-Spined Toads were introduced to Bali and other parts of Eastern Indonesia during the 1950s and are doing well in these areas.
Habitat: Black-Spined Toads are terrestrial species that usually live in groups and can be found in open grassland and woodland in moist areas near a water source. They make their homes in crevices and under stones and once happy with a hiding place will stay there permanently, returning each morning to the same spot.
They also do well in Suburban areas, as they have adapted to using street lighting to their advantage by crowding around the lights and waiting for any insects that are attracted to become their next meal.
